AstraZeneca strengthens its commitment to Barcelona’s life sciences ecosystem
AstraZeneca has inaugurated the new headquarters of its Global Hub in Barcelona, located in the emblematic Edifici Estel, a space that combines biomedical research with data science, technology, and commercial excellence to accelerate the arrival of life-changing treatments.
The new headquarters currently hosts 1,600 professionals working on 385 research projects and 190 clinical trials. The company plans a total investment of €1.3 billion in the Barcelona Hub by 2027, with the goal of accelerating high-impact treatments in areas such as Oncology, Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolic diseases, Respiratory and Immunology, Rare Diseases, and Vaccines and Immunotherapies, through the use of disruptive technologies like genomics, precision medicine, and artificial intelligence.
The Hub, part of AstraZeneca’s global network aimed at launching 20 new medicines before 2030, currently employs around 1,600 people and drives more than 385 research projects and 190 clinical trials across key areas.
During the event, Jaume Collboni, Mayor of Barcelona, highlighted that the inauguration of the new centre “says a lot about the future Barcelona we are building — a Barcelona that places knowledge at the heart of its economy as a driver of social progress. A Barcelona that is committed to retaining talent and creating opportunities for its citizens.”
This progress reflects the strength of Barcelona’s innovation ecosystem and the collaboration between public institutions and private companies that make projects like this possible. ACCIÓ, Biocat, Barcelona Activa, and the Barcelona Investment Office have played a decisive role in attracting this investment to Barcelona.
According to Biocat’s 2024 report, foreign investment in Catalonia’s health sector reached €550 million and generated nearly 1,700 new jobs last year. AstraZeneca played a key role in this growth, investing €257.6 million and creating 540 new positions in the region.
Barcelona continues to strengthen its position as one of Europe’s leading hubs for life sciences, technology, and health innovation. Since the creation of the Global Hub in the city, AstraZeneca has become a key driver of this transformation — creating highly qualified employment, attracting international talent, and boosting global investment.
