Institutional agreement to set up the first European theragnosis centre in Barcelona
The creation of the Fraunhofer CAT centre at the Barcelona Science Park will be a key step in promoting theragnosis, an innovative technique in nuclear medicine combining therapy and diagnostics to offer patients personalised treatment. The agreement was signed by the governments of Spain and Catalonia and the German public institution Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.

The centre will be set up at the Barcelona Science Park and start its activity under the direction of professor Josep Samitier, director of the IBEC and professor of the Department of Electronics and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Barcelona (UB), with the intention of boosting knowledge transfer between the academic and industrial sectors, speeding up prototype development, concept testing and new medical devices, attracting international science and tech talent and driving the internationalisation of the Catalan biomedical sector in connection with German and European innovation ecosystems.
Commitment to shared funding
To guarantee the stability and sustainability of the project, the institutions involved have agreed a global funding plan of 26.5 million euros until 2031. Barcelona City Council will provide 8 million euros and the Government of Catalonia, through its Ministry of Research and Universities, 14 million euros, while the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities will provide 4.5 million euros.
This shared effort highlights the common desire to consolidate Catalonia as a European leader in applied research and biomedical innovation.
