THE ICT sector in Barcelona is growing and specializing
In 2024, this field employed 129.608 professionals in the city, 6% moret han in 2023.

The Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector continues to grow in Barcelona and is increasingly looking for more specialized professionals. This is the main data that emerges from the “Digital Talent Overview 2025” report prepared by the Mobile World Capital Barcelona Foundation with the support of the company Eurecat.
Main conclusions
In 2024, Barcelona had 7.423 more ICT professionals than in 2023. These figures are in line with those of the European Union, where the digital sector has grown by 56.7% in the last decade, well above what employment in general has done (9.1%). The Catalan capital is specifically looking for specialists in application development, experts in Agile and Scrum and professionals in 5G, sustainable or quantum computing.
Other data that demonstrate the good health of the city in this field is the increase in jobs occupied by women. In 2024, Barcelona reached a historic high for this female talent, which represented 31,6% of the sector as a whole. The professions with the highest presence of women were digital marketing, User Experience or Interface (UX/UI) and sustainable computing.
On the other hand, the average salary of employees in this field in the city has reached 48.600 euros on average, increasing by 44% in recent years. The best-paid specialties are cybersecurity (61.200 euros on average), artificial intelligence (57.500 euros) and cloud computing (56.400 euros).
The digital ecosystem in Barcelona
The data from the reports produced this spring by the Department of Economy, Finance, Economic Promotion and Tourism of the Barcelona City Council already highlight the progress and consolidation of this sector. The reference documents were the Startaups and Scaleups Report (from May) and the Digital and Tech 2025 (published in April). These works confirm that Barcelona continues to be the preferred ecosystem in southern Europe for the creation or establishment of new startups in the digital and technological field, and the 5th on the continent.
On an international scale, the city’s position is consolidated, especially thanks to the events it hosts, such as the Mobile World Congress, the ISE-Europe Fair or the Smart City Expo. And also for initiatives such as the one promoted by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center in the field of artificial intelligence, the BSC AI Factory.
In parallel, the City Council also has financing instruments to mobilize public and private capital, attract international companies and consolidate existing ones.
All of this has resulted in new data that continues to rise. In 2023, compared to 2022, 13.500 more digital professionals settled in Barcelona, going from 108.685 to 122.185. And the number of Hubs dedicated to the ICT field was 6% higher in 2024 (160 hubs) compared to 2023 (when there were 140). These 160 centers employ 34.869 people, and generate 2.8 billion euros in business.
