Swimming pools from 1970

Named after the Catalan swimmer who founded the Royal Spanish Swimming Federation, the Piscines Bernat Picornell opened a mere year before the 1970 European Swimming Championships were held there. Three outdoor swimming pools were built: one for training, another for competitions and a third for diving. Redevelopment work began in 1990 to turn this into a venue for the Olympic swimming, synchronised swimming and water polo competitions, and the training pool was covered and heated. Since then, the Picornell Pools have held several international championships, including some of the events in the 2003 and 2013 World Swimming Championships.

The Olympic Ring gym

The pools are currently a municipally owned centre run by a private company. They are open throughout the year and their facilities include supervised activity rooms and padel courts. The centre also has synchronised swimming and water polo teams.
