The Cooperativa Obrera Popular Segle XX was a product of the workers’ movement in this maritime neighbourhood and provided workers with economic, social and cultural support.

Cultural heritage

Shops, bakery, café and tavern

Founded by 100 members in 1901, it soon ran two shops (groceries and drug store), the bakery, the café section and the tavern. It was destroyed by the bombardments on 25 January 1939, one day before Franco's troops entered Barcelona. It was about to disappear in the 1940s, but it managed to hold on by renting spaces to the Club Natació Atlètic-Barceloneta and to Cors Clavé.

Civic management facility

The building became the headquarters of the Casal de Barri Comunitari Cooperativa Segle XX, a civic management facility focused on the arts and young people, which is keeping the story of the Cooperativa Segle XX alive.
