The Vapor Nou textile mill, which opened in 1839, was the second mill to set up in the district after Vapor Vilaregut, popularly known as “Vapor Vell” (Old Steam).

El Vapor Nou was Francesc Puigmartí’s textile factory which, with its 25 mechanical looms, provided jobs for 800 workers, men and women, most of whom were from the neighbourhood.
The cylindrical brick chimney – in the traditional style – in the modern-day Plaça del Poble Romaní is the only trace of the factory and the only one still standing in the entire district.

El Vapor Nou era la fàbrica tèxtil de Francesc Puigmartí que, amb els seus vint-i-cinc telers mecànics, donava feina a vuit-cents treballadors i treballadores, la majoria dels quals eren del barri.
La xemeneia cilíndrica i d'obra vista –segons les fórmules tradicionals– de l´actual plaça del Poble Romaní és l'únic vestigi de la fàbrica i l'única que resta dempeus a tot el districte.
