The complex

The building was constructed over eleven years, from 1895 to 1906, following the design of Ignasi C. Bartrolí and the classicist style prevalent at the time. A prime example of this style is the façade on Carrer de Casanova, the main entrance to the Faculty of Medicine, featuring an imposing portico supported by classical columns and a pediment adorned with Greco-Roman inspired allegorical reliefs.

Pioneers in Medicine

Hospital Clínic comprises ten institutes and centres organised by medical speciality. Its healthcare services encompass primary care, hospital care, social and health services, mental health units, transplant services, and private care; in addition to the main site, the hospital network includes the Maternitat and Plató sites, among other centres.

Hospital Clínic has frequently been the site of pioneering medical procedures in Spain, such as the country's first kidney transplant (1965), the first bone marrow transplant (1976) and the first combined pancreas and kidney transplant (1983). Innovation is a core principle of the institution; for instance, in 2014, the hospital introduced a minimally invasive technique for treating heart failure. Some of the most distinguished figures in contemporary Catalan medicine, such as Moisès Broggi and Josep Maria Gil-Vernet, have practiced at the centre.
