Antoni Gaudí's genius transformed the ruins of a historic site in the Collserola range into the dreamlike castle that is Torre Bellesguard.

A place with history

Although its straight lines are far removed from the sinuous curves characteristic of Gaudí’s architecture, Torre Bellesguard is nevertheless one of the finest examples of the master architect’s architectural innovation. Jaume Figueres, a businessman and close friend of Gaudí’s, wanted to build a house for his family in a unique setting with lots of political significance. So he chose a place in Collserola, where there were the remains of a mediaeval castle that belonged to King Martín the Humane but which, in the 18th century, was home to the highwayman Serrallonga.

A castle in the Modernista style

Gaudí, impressed by the history of this spot, designed a house inspired by the old castle with some very straight lines, and he made the most of the remains to design the garden of the estate. The result is an impressive mansion that resembles a castle with its merlons but has a lot of Gaudiesque touches, such as the use of wrought iron, ceramic mosaic benches, large, colourful glazed windows and brick friezes, as well as a detail that does not escape the curious eye of visitors: the ivy-shaped pipes.

Torre Bellesguard, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1969, is now open for guided tours, so you can enjoy the majesty of its rooms, the tranquillity of its gardens and the spectacular views but, above all, so you can admire close up, one of Gaudí’s treasures, perhaps the one most hidden from view.

La Torre Bellesguard va ser construïda per Antoni Gaudí entre 1900 i 1909, amb unes formes rectes molt poc habituals en la seva obra, inspirades en el castell medieval de Martí I l'Humà, últim rei de la dinastia catalana del Casal de Barcelona, que va viure a Bellesguard fins a la seva mort l'any 1410. Gaudí construeix un castell a mig camí entre el modernisme i el gòtic i restaura les restes del Palau medieval, que formen part dels jardins de la finca.
