It looks just like any street in Sarrià but it hides a secret. Painted on a wall of number 5 is the Plus Ultra plane, a technological feat from the 1920s.

  • Urban spaces

During the first half of the 20th century, the world was fascinated by new scientific discoveries and the invention of all sorts of new devices. The outbreak of World War I was the unfortunate impetus behind aeronautics as a means of destruction, but after the war these developments were put to new, more positive uses, for making the world a much more accessible place. One feat of flight that made the front pages of the newspapers of its day was carried out by the Plus Ultra aeroplane on 22 January 1926. It was the first hydroplane to cross the Atlantic, and it broke the record for the longest distance travelled: 10,270 kilometres. Sarrià honoured this feat by naming one of its streets after the plane, and at number 40 there’s a mural commemorating the accomplishment.
