It looks just like any street in Sarrià, but it hides a secret. Painted on a wall at number 5 is the Plus Ultra aeroplane, a technological feat of the 1920s.

During the first half of the 20th century, the world was fascinated by new scientific discoveries and the invention of all sorts of new devices. The outbreak of World War I was unfortunately the driving force behind the development of aeronautical engineering, but once the conflict was over, aircraft took flight on feats that have made the world more accessible to us today. One feat of flight that made the front pages of the newspapers of its day was carried out by the Plus Ultra aeroplane on 22 January 1926. It was the first seaplane to cross the Atlantic, and it broke the record for the longest distance travelled: 10,270 kilometres. Sarrià honoured this feat by naming one of its streets after the plane, and at number 40 there’s a mural commemorating the accomplishment.
