It is the centre of the town's social, religious and political life, the crucible of its residents’ identity. In the mid-nineteenth century, Sarrià was a rural village: agriculture was still tied to the landowner’s power and the noble families were still holding on to their sovereignty. Its history changed not because of the Industrial Revolution but because of the changes sparked by social unrest. This square has borne witness to fragments of our country's history, such as the fall of General Espartero. In the uprising against this General, the chemist Margenat died, and the house on the corner of Major de Sarrià bears his surname, the name of one of the most influential families in the neighbourhood's history. Before the market was built, the square was filled with fruit, vegetable and meat stalls, along with the popular dairy with its own stable in Pedralbes. Older people recall the urinals in the square, one for men and the other for women, very close to the now-vanished dispensary and the bar in the square. Over time, the antique and old book fairs have replaced the popular uprisings and the fruit and vegetable market. Maybe you can still find traces of the old village amidst the stalls!
