The arrival of the railway in 1869 sparked a radical social change in Sarrià. When the walls of Barcelona were torn down, the bourgeoisie flocked to Sarrià fleeing the densely populated city. Barcelona and Collserola were now just two hours apart. Sarrià became a privileged place to spend the summer, enjoy the natural surroundings and benefit from a healthier climate. Tradesmen were needed to build houses for them, and masons, painters, blacksmiths and carpenters, among others, settled all along the Carrer Major de Sarrià. They created a vibrant commercial street that still houses many venerable establishments.
