The Cases Francesc Farreras, a set of houses on the junction of Gran Via with Carrer de Villarroel, form an imposing stone building which dates from 1903.

Stone fantasy

Without any doubt, the most striking feature of this edifice is its lavish decoration. Various animal figures are sculpted in stone on the facade, ranging from the mice covering the capitals to the cockerels, dogs and other animals on the bay windows. Some of these figures are halfway between a plant and an animal: the interpretation is in the eye of the beholder. The gargoyles and the capitals with the heads of women and satyrs, surrounded by flowers, also stand out. And the interior is just as extraordinary as the exterior, with glazed ceramic tiles, stucco and sgraffito decoration. Quite a sight!

Montjuïc stone

The whole facade is made with stone brought from Montjuïc, a precious material that changes colour, depending on the light shining on it. And, besides the practically hallucinatory decoration, there are the curved and triangular bay windows that are very typical of this architect.
