Lluïsos Square

The landowners, Ramon Martí and Pau Vilaregut, commissioned the architect and town planner Antoni Rovira i Trias to lay out this square around 1851

The square is home to Lluïsos de Gràcia, a long-established local organisation founded in 1855 which remains fully active to this day.  La Salle de Gràcia school is right next door.

An authentic square

It was renovated several times during the last century. Although partly paved, it retains its central sandy area. The most recent renovation, in 2000, gave it its current appearance, somewhere between a park and a garden: two levels, a mixture of paving and sand, and tipuana trees surrounding it, with grass flowerbeds along one side. A fountain set in a Doric column can still be seen here, bearing a relief of the town's former coat of arms, from when it was an independent town separate from Barcelona.
