The 19th-century Casa Sagnier, which is now a Civic Centre, is one of the district's listed buildings. It was built on the Turó de Monterols hill.

The son’s work

The present-day house was designed by the architect Enric Sagnier i Villavecchia, one of the owner’s sons. In 1900, the father decided to demolish the old house and build a new one, with 12 bedrooms, a chapel and a games room. A cavern on the property provided the house with water, and there was a tennis court and a miniature steam train in the garden. The entrance to the property was on Carrer de Brusi. The eclectically-styled building combines typically Modernista, Gothic and oriental-style features. It is a romantic little palace dotted with cast-iron floral ornaments.

From country house to public facility

Casa Sagnier was the family’s summer residence from 1894 to 1936. It remained empty from the start of the Civil War to 1955. It then became the Virgen Inmaculda ladies’ college, which remained open until 1981. In 1985 it became the International Historical Studies Centre, which closed down in 1996. The house remained closed until 2007, when the City Council turned it into the present-day civic centre.
